LAST WEEK OF THE TRIMESTER!
We're in the home stretch... aren't you all excited?!?
I want to thank all of you for your patience with me while I was sick last week. I'm feeling much better and appreciate all your well-wishes!
BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: Apparently I put faulty directions on your Periodic Table quiz! Were you all confused? On MONDAY I will GIVE YOU BACK YOUR QUIZZES with new directions: to just give me the abbreviation of each of the elements at the bottom of the quiz. I have not graded them because I want to give you all another chance to answer the bottom part of the quiz.
ANOTHER BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: This week, I will not take up any homework. The only paper you'll have to turn in is our lab. I'll assign it as a way to study for this week's test-- not as an item to be graded. HOORAY!
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: ****LAB MOVED TO WEDNESDAY BECAUSE OF LAB SPACE CONFLICT***
MONDAY 15 more minutes of quiz time; discuss chapter 5 section 3. Key words: ATOMIC RADIUS, VALENCE ELECTRONS, IONIZATION ENERGY, ELECTRONEGATIVITY.
HOMEWORK: read the lab for tomorrow!
TUESDAY give back/go over tests, homework, etc...
WEDNESDAY LAB: halide salts
THURSDAY review chapter 5 HOMEWORK: turn in Halide Salts Lab.
FRIDAY test on chapter 5
Friday's test will ask a lot about the groups of the periodic table and the reactivity of different electron configurations.
See you Monday!

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE
Here's our Dude of the Week: DMITRI MENDELEEV.
He's the guy who, finally and at last, got together everything known about different elements and organized a table called the Periodic Table. We'll talk a lot about him.
MONDAY: begin chapter 5: Mendeleev and the Periodic Table
HOMEWORK: read ch 5 section 1 for READING QUIZ
TUESDAY: READING QUIZ on ch 5 sx 1: finish sx 1, move into sx 2
HOMEWORK: worksheet ch 5 sx 1; read section 2
WEDNESDAY: Ch 5 sx 2: periodic table vocab, names, trends.
HOMEWORK: choose 2 periodic GROUPS and write a paragraph about each group's properties. Choices: alkali metals, alkali earth metals, halogens, noble gases, transition elements, metalloids, hydrogen (in a group by itself!)
THURSDAY: Determining an element's group from its electron configuration.
HOMEWORK: get ready for a PERIODIC TABLE QUIZ!
FRIDAY: periodic table quiz**-- see below.
HOMEWORK: read section 3 for MONDAY.
**Guys, it is time to memorize some facts from the periodic table. On Friday, you'll have a QUIZ ON THE ELEMENTS up to number 86. I need for you to know the abbreviation for each element (IOW, what is P? What is Pb? What is W?), and, if applicable, the name of the group each element belongs to (halides, alkali metals, etc...). THE PERIODIC TABLE WILL STAY UP FOR THIS QUIZ, but you need to know all the names and vocab!
Next MONDAY AND TUESDAY, we'll do a lab on the reactivity of halides and alkali metals. Then move on to Section 3.
here's a Happy Halloween video for everyone!

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE
Wow, this chapter is hard! Between that and losing students for sporting events, we have to move the test to THURSDAY OCTOBER 27TH.
So here's our week:
MONDAY-- wavelength/frequency problems: Gizmo on electron shells and how they fill
HW: worksheet on ch 4 sx 2 (if not done already), wavelength/frequency problems
TUESDAY-- more of the electron shell Gizmo
HW: electron shell problems
WEDNESDAY: Review ch 4
THURSDAY: TEST CHAPTER 4
FRIDAY: start chapter 5-- the periodic table
The test will cover chapter 4 sections 1, 2, and 3. Particularly you'll need to know:
* the Bohr model of the Hydrogen Atom
* how and why atome emit photons of light
* the dual wave/particle theory of proton behavior, and what this has to do with photon emission and the various electron shells
* how to convert wavelength into frequency and vice-versa (we'll work problems on this Monday or Tuesday).
* the basic types and shapes of electron orbitals
* Quantum numbers of the atom-- including energy level, angular, spin, and magnetic numbers
* how electrons fill the electron shells-- in what order, how many per subshell, how many orbitals per shell, etc...
* proper electron shell notation, including Noble Gas Notation.
I will be at tutorial on TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY MORNINGS starting at about 7:50. If you've missed class recently because of sports, you'll NEED to come to one with your QUESTIONS READY!
--And now, some links for you!
1. Guess what? YOU CAN PLAY WITH THESE GIZMOS AT HOME!
Just go to:
http://www.explorelearning.com
Then look to the upper right corner and click on "enroll in a class".
You'll have to sign up for a (free!) account with explorelearning.
When it asks you the class code, enter R8DRANFAXP
2. Here's a power point on how to work the wavelength and frequency problems:

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE
Get ready, because we will TAKE A TEST ON CHAPTER 2 ON FRIDAY! It's a short chapter.
Also... I'm really sorry guys, but we have to defer the "Taste Test" portion of the popcorn lab to Tuesday. Seems that my schedule won't allow me to have popped-up corn for you on Monday. So we'll pop-but-not-eat Monday and eat/discuss data on Tuesday.
See the calendar to the right. Highlights:
MON- Popcorn Lab-- the not-eating portion. Turn in Ch 2 sxn 1 HW if not already in.
TUE-- Popcorn Lab-- the taste test. Discuss data for popcorn lab; HW: read ch 2 sxn 3.
WED-- Scientific notation and sig figs. HW: ch 2 sx 3 worksheet
THUR-- finish up chapter 2
FRI-- chapter 2 test

MORE ON CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL CHANGES
Here's my hero, Paul Anderson, explaining chemical and physical changes. We'll watch him on Tuesday, then do some chemical and physical changes of our own in the lab.
Friday, September 2, 2011
NEXT WEEK'S PROJECT:
Be thinking about which element you'd like to do for next week's poster project, which will start Tuesday and be due Friday. Have at least three you'd like to do, because no two people can have the same one!
Have a great weekend!
